Boko Haram Kills Another Army Commander, Lt. Col. Umar

A senior Nigerian soldier was on Tuesday killed by the Boko Haram, army sources told Premium Times.  B.U. Umar, a lieutenant colonel and commanding officer of 114 TF battalion of the Nigerian Army was ambushed alongside his troops on Monday morning between Bita and Piridang. “His vehicle stepped on an improvised explosive device, but he was not hurt,” a source told Premium Times. “He came out to assess the damage on the vehicle and Boko Haram opened fire and killed him in the process.” The soldiers were said to be on their way to Yola in Adamawa State from Bita in Borno State when the incident occurred, sources said. The full casualty from the attack is not yet clear. Mr. Umar, who recently took over the command of the 114 battalion about three weeks ago, was a member of the 48 Regular Course in the Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA. Corps Member Drowns in Bayelsa Boat Mishap

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member is feared drowned in a boat accident on Thursday in Okpotuwari Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa.  Sources in the community told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the corps member, who hailed from Anambra drowned when the canoe he boarded capsized. Mr Tontiemote Yeiyei, a resident of the community said that the deceased, who was serving at Okpotuwari Community had gone to Ondewari with two of his friends across the Osiana creek by a hand paddled canoe. Yeiyei said the ill-fated canoe encountered rough currents at the jetty as the deceased and the others were returning to Okpotuwari.  Senate Rejects President Buhari's 2016 FIRS Budget

The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly voted against the report of its committee on Finance, on the budget of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for the 2016 fiscal year. The Senate had at its sitting of Thursday, 21st July 2016 considered the request of President Muhammadu Buhari on the 2016 Budget of the FIRS and referred same to the committee on Finance for further legislative action. However, when the committee’s report was read on the floor by the Chairman, Senator John Enoh, the Senate President and other Senators discovered loopholes in the said report.  The committee through its report, had recommended that a total expenditure of N143, 722, 430, 526 (One Hundred and Forty-Three Billion, Seven Hundred and Twenty-Two Million, Four Hundred and Thirty Thousand, Five Hundred and Twenty-Six naira) be approved for FIRS in 2016. 2 Men Nabbed While Attempting To Buy Dollars With Fake Naira Notes

Two yet-to-be named men were arrested on Wednesday in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, while trying to buy some dollars with fake naira notes. They were nabbed at a Bureau De Change located in Zone 4, Wuse area of Abuja. It was gathered that the suspects mixed real and counterfeit Naira notes which amounted to about N2m. They approached a Bureau De Change operator in exchange for dollars. But luck ran out on them after the Bureau De Change operator noticed that of the N2m presented to him, only N50, 000 was real naira notes. The operator, who simply identified himself as Sani, raised the alarm and the duo was handed over to the Wuse Police Division. An officer, Uchendu Michael told our correspondent that, “In this recession? They would not escape. They are already in our custody, the matter would be investigated and the suspects would be made to face the law.”

In 2015, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Nike, which will see the US-based sportwear giant provide products worth $3.75m. The new home kit is a deep shade of green, with white ribbing around the back of the modern crewneck collar, while the away jersey is white with a green stripe that runs down the sides of the shirts and shorts. Senate Rejects Buhari’s Request To Borrow $30 billion

  The Senate has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for authorisation to borrow about $30 billion.  The president, last Tuesday, forwarded a request to the National Assembly to approve external borrowing plan of $29.960 billion to execute key infrastructural projects across the country between 2016 and 2018. He made the requests in two separate letters to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. Mr. Buhari said the external loan, the biggest in Nigeria’s history, will fund targeted projects cuts across all sectors with special emphasis on infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, water supply, growth and employment generation. Other sectors, he said, included poverty reduction through social safety net programs and governance and financial management reforms, among others. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Saturday declared that the sovereign state of Biafra when actualised will not be a member of the Organisation of Islamic Countries, OIC, but that it will welcome the Shiite movement.   Muiz Banire, the national legal adviser of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied that he ever bribed a Nigerian judge.  Sources at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had told SaharaReporters that, as part of their investigation into corruption in the judiciary, they had discovered that Mr. Banire gave a questionable donation of N500,000 to a federal judge, Justice Terseer Agbadu-Fishim. The Lagos state Ministry of Transportation in conjunction with the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) plans to employ 1,000 graduates from different universities as bus conductors  Comrade Israel Ade Adeshola, the National President of BCAN said that the new policy is to give bus conducting profession a new look. According to him, “presently Lagos state government through the Lagos State Drivers Institute, LASDRI is training and accrediting conductors in the state, adding that after the training the graduands would be employed as Bus Conductors and would be on the payroll of the government with a salary worth of N50,000 per month. “The objective is to make the job of bus conducting attractive, respected and dignified as obtainable globally”, he said. Adeshola explained that there is a project in the pipeline by the state government to change the face of transportation system to enhance security and also provide employment opportunity in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the unknown gunmen numbering about eight, invaded the Peace Community, Road 3, Ganaja road, Lokoja residence of Abubakar at about 2:05 Saturday morning to carry out the dastardly act.  Residents of the area, who spoke with newsmen, said they were gripped with fear when they started hearing gunshots from the residence of the chairman of Fulani socio-cultural group in the operation that lasted over an hour. They said that the gunmen passed through “unfamiliar routes” to gain access to the deceased’s residence beating the ‘C’ Division Police Station route where they could have been spotted and questioned.

Senate Finally Amends Code Of Conduct Bill

    The Nigerian Senate took a bold step on Thursday by finally passing the Code of Conduct amendment bill, 2016. The amendment included altering the tenure of office of the chairman and members of the Code of Conduct Bureau. Also amended was the tenure of the chairman and members from serving until they are 70, to a term of five years. The exercise follows months of discussions in the Senate, regarding the need to amend the bill. It also comes months after the trial of Senate President Bukola for false asset declaration, commenced at the Code Of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).      A five-man panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja has dashed the hopes of Senate President Bukola Saraki of evading the corruption trial initiated by the Federal Government for the alleged false declaration of assets. The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja today struck out the application filed by the embattled Senate President challenging the jurisdiction of the at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to entertain the charges against him. In a unanimous decision which was read by Justice Abdul Aboki who led the five-man panel ruled that the appeal is unmeritorious and was then entirely dismissed. The court resolved all the nine grounds of appeal against Saraki and affirmed the power of the tribunal to entertain and try him for the charges brought against him. Former Minister Obanikoro Remains In EFCC Custody As He Fails To Refund First N100m

    Former Minister of State (Defence) Musiliu Obanikoro is yet to refund the N785million allegedly collected from the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA), The Nation learnt yesterday. Of the cash, Obanikoro planned to immediately refund about N100million to regain his freedom and look for the balance. From ONSA, about N4.685billon was transferred to Sylva McNamara Limited, a company allegedly linked to the ex-minister. A Brazil-based Nigerian hairstylist has been arrested by Nigerian anti-drug detectives with cocaine hidden inside her bra. The suspect, Nnaji Juliet Ijeoma, 30 was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on Friday. She was caught with the illicit drug at the airport during the inward screening of South African Airways. If the suspect had succeeded smuggling in the drug into Nigeria, she stood to reap the sum of N1 million from her sponsors.

Police Parade Killers Of Port Harcourt Lawyer, Ken Atsuete

 The police have paraded a father, his son and two others for alleged involvement in the kidnap and murder of a Port Harcourt lawyer and activist, Mr. Ken Atsuete.  The lawyer was murdered on August 29, 2016, along Onuchiolu road, Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government area of Rivers State. Those arrested in connection with the incident are Chibiko Amuzuo, Amadi Nathaniel, Ezims Aleru and his son, Junior Aleru. Parading them on Friday in Abuja, the Force Spokesman, Don Awunah said exhibits recovered from them include, one AK 47 rifle, 124 live ammunition, and four AK 47 magazines. He identified Amuzuo,22, a native of Umuchie in Omuna Local Government Area of Rivers State as the leader of the gang. Awunah said, “Amuzuo is a self-confessed member of the Iceland Cult group, Kelga Mariner and a notorious kidnapper. He also confessed to having led his gang of armed men to murder the deceased.
